Adsense: What It Is And How It Works

By Darrel Hawes

Google Adsense is one of many services operated by the web-based company. The Adsense program lets website owners generate advertising money through displaying ads on one or more of their websites. After signing up for the program, all the website owner must do is place a piece of code on their site. The determination of which ads will show is a factor of both the keywords and also the content that exists on the site.

For website owners who rely on advertising revenue for part of their income, Google's Adsense system has become the foundation of that effort. Several reasons exist for this. Adsense ads are often less distracting than the typical banner type ads. Due to Google's method for selecting which ads appear on which websites, Adsense ads are most often highly relevant to the website on which they are displayed.

The way Adsense works is this. A website visitor clicks on an advertisement on a web page. This action generates revenue for the website owner, from a few cents up to one dollar or even more. The specific ads are drawn from the Adwords advertisers network.

You might assume that owners of websites would be tempted to click on advertisements on their own sites, knowing that each click earns them revenue. Its is not surprising to learn that Google takes click fraud very seriously and knows how to determine when it happens. When they catch someone committing click fraud, usually the guilty person is banned from ever using Adsense again.

Website owners can subtly persuade visitors to click on ads through the use of three primary methods:

The use of several varieties of traffic generating techniques to get more visitors to their websites.

Improving the content on their website, so more valuable ads get shown and clicked on.

The use of sales copy on the site to induce browsers to click on their ads. Many site owners use phrases such as "Sponsored Links" or "Advertisements". Of course, it violates Google's Adsense rules to use statements such as "Click on these links".
