The Method

The best method for tying a good knot is to start with your shirt fastened up all the way to the top button with the collar up. Whether you have the wide end of the tie on the left or right side is just a matter of choice and of course if you are left or right handed.

Always try to keep the knot as tight as possible while tying your tie. Unless you are taking over an existing location, the build out costs for leasehold improvements, equipment, seating, flooring, lighting and related capital outlays can easily exceed $150,000. These are what some in the business call sunk costs, meaning they are expenditures that take years to recover assuming your business is able to survive that long. Either way these are upfront costs you will incur, and if you are fortunate enough you will be able to amortize these expenses over a period of many profitable years in the future.

In the initial 6-12 months or longer, be prepared to spend long hours and weekends away from your friends and family. If you are fortunate enough to make it, it will be due to a combination of hard work and dumb luck. In case you didn't know, there are 168 hours in a week. That's not a very long time to get everything done that you need to get done. Most of us don't get done what we want to get done and end up putting it off until tomorrow. However, effective time management can change this.

Here are five tips that can help you use your time better.

1. Put it on your schedule. For everything you need to get done during the day, literally put it on your schedule. In addition, make time for both work and play. Schedule everything and then follow the schedule to the letter. If you want to spend some time at the gym, for example, make sure you put on the schedule, and make it part of your routine.

2. Every night before you go to bed, make out your schedule for the next day. If you wish calm you can construct it in the morning instead, but then stick to it once you have it down. When a task has been completed, mark it off until you've gone down your list. You can begin your list by writing of the things that need to get done right as you get up, and then go on down through your day until you get the last task checked off. If you follow this method, you'll keep yourself from getting behind.

3. DON'T make television, your cell phone, social websites, etc., part of your day. In other words, these things should not go on your schedule. If you get everything else done and want to play a little bit, then you can do some surfing or watch a little television. However, wait until you've gotten everything else complete to do this.

4. Take care of your required tasks first, and leave the ones that can wait until another day. We are not superhuman, and no one says that you can take on a mountain of projects in one day. Try to remain realistic of what you can handle and cannot for that particular day.

5. Alternate harder and easier tasks if you feel too overwhelmed. Remember that it is about effective time management, not about how many difficult tasks that you can complete in one day. Also see if your list of more difficult projects can be spread out over the course of a week. You might also want to try making a list of things to do for the week so you can pick what days will be best for different projects.

In short, time management is all about planning ahead. Of course, complications are going to occur in your schedule sometimes, so you'll need to go to "plan B" when necessary. Still, simply having a plan and schedule to begin with is going to help keep you more efficient, effective and productive so that you use your time wisely.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) last week put out a notice for public comment in advance of its two-day workshop on debt collection process and arbitration practices to be held in early August.

The FTC will be hosting a workshop in Chicago " formally titled Protecting Consumers in Debt Collection Litigation and Arbitration: A Roundtable Discussion " to dissertate policy concerns surrounding the accounts receivable management industrys use of the legal system. The event, scheduled for August 5-6, will be the first in a series on the topic, according to the FTC.

The event follows up on the FTCs February 2009 Report, Collecting Consumer Debts: The Challenges of Change " A Workshop Report, which suggested that the debt collection managerial system in the U.S. should be changed and revamped. The report also disclosed that the FTC would hold regional roundtables to help develop policy suggestions related to debt collection litigation and arbitration proceedings against individual consumers. The Chicago event, hosted on the campus of Northwestern University Law School, will be the first of these roundtable conversations for state court judges, government officials, debt collectors, consumer advocates, academics and other stakeholders.

Any party interested in submitting written comments or original research on the matter should do so before August 1st. Comments can be submitted electronically through the FTCs Web site. The workshop is free and open to the public.

Earlier this year, the FTC noted in its FDCPA report that laws and regulations that govern debt collection litigation should be addressed and even modified. But because of limited information, the FTC would need to convene additional meetings to develop a policy recommendation.

It is uncertain what current practices the FTC is looking to modify or what direction its policy might head. In the 4 months since the board released its suggestions on the FDCPA, there have been significant changes. For example, one of the first recommendations saw the FDCPA continuing to be administered by the FTC. But recently, there have been calls for a new consumer protection agency to take responsibility for debt collection laws.

The IRS recently announced that participants in 529 plans will be able to change their investments more often in 2009 than in past years. The latter is also a savings account for education expenses that offers tax-free distributions, but funds saved in a Coverdell ESA can be used for elementary and secondary school expenses as well as college costs.

ITIL Training - Are We Ready for V3

It is now two years since the OGC launched ITIL (R) version 3; its best practice guidance for IT Service Management. Since the launch, the administrators of the examination scheme (APMG) have been busy getting the new qualifications scheme, leading to the ITIL Expert qualification, into shape.

However, perhaps this new qualification scheme could - before it has really got going properly - already be due for a review according to the most recent figures for ITIL training. They show a high number of candidates taking version 3 foundation level training, but a very low take-up for the subsequent capabilities and lifecycle training courses.

Perhaps the reason for this situation is the sheer number of courses needed to be taken to qualify as an ITIL Expert. Delegates now need to complete six or seven separate courses to qualify; which translates into between twenty-two to twenty-seven days of training. By contrast, the older V2 scheme leading to the Service Manager certificate only took thirteen days to complete.

The new qualification schema is a three-level affair with a fourth level also scheduled. Of course, this new range of courses may be good for training providers, but the key question is: is it right for the market? The absence of a significant number of bums-on-seats seems to me to suggest that it absolutely is not.

In addition, whilst the V2 Service Manager certificate is live, it remains a much more attractive route to the new top-level V3 qualification for many people since it only requires eighteen days to complete from scratch; and just fifteen if you already hold a V2 Foundation certificate. This boils down to less days out of the office, lower cost and fewer exams to pass.

Although the new scheme is still in its infancy, APMG really need to begin addressing the issues early. This means closing-down the old V2 scheme as a matter of priority if they are really committed to getting version 3 rolling.
